The M.Ed program (Master of Education) was started in GCOE from the session 2004-05 with an intake capacity of 19 (15 open + 4). The program comprised the following components to be completed in two semesters each of six months duration. The course was of 52 credits with first semester of 28 credits and second semester of 24 credits with theory part, practicum and dissertation cum viva-voce upto 2014 batch. Then a two-year M.Ed program was started in the year 2015-16 with intake capacity of (15+4) with total credits including theory part, practicum and dissertation cum viva-voce. In 2016-18 batch the intake capacity was increased from 19 to 29 (25+4) with the same program (all these programs were affiliated to University of Jammu). In 2017-19 batch the intake capacity was increased to 40 (30+10) with affiliation from Cluster University of Jammu till date with same intake capacity.
The Master of Education is now a two-year (4 semester) full-time program that provides an opportunity for professionals in the field of education to enhance their skills by undertaking advanced coursework and research in the area of interest. The course provides teaching professionals, educators as well as pre-service teachers the career prospects in terms of advancement of knowledge and qualifications and ultimately making them better teachers.
The course also prepares graduates to inquire into the nature of educational problems and generate new knowledge which can be used to enhance policy and practice, and develop the skills to tackle the challenging and dynamic world of teaching, especially in the era of digital teaching. Students taking admission in the program prefer Government College of Education Jammu as it is the only institution run by the Government higher education department and is cost-effective.
The college offers a separate well-established library exclusively for M.Ed students, well-qualified (Ph.D) teaching staff, modern M.Ed rooms with smart boards, friendly and congenial environment in the college, proper girls' common room as the majority of students are females, and a proper guidance and counselling cell with expertise who guide the students.
